Dear Families,
What a great first week in 1st grade! We began to learn about PAWS (practice positive thinking, act respectfully, work to make healthy decisions and solve problems). We made individual charts about what it each part of PAWS looks like and sounds like in our classroom.
Thank you so much for allowing me the opportunity to work with your children individually two weeks ago on our “Smart Start” days. Thank you for arranging your personal/work schedules in order for your child to participate. The information gathered during these appointments is so valuable in starting the school year off with a running start. I was impressed by the students’ skills and abilities. J
Volunteer opportunities in the classroom will begin in October. I will have more information at our open house night.
If the way your child is going home is changing for the day please send in a note or call the office. If sending in notes please make sure that you include your child’s first and last name. Also, please put the note in your child’s folder. Thank you!
If you send in lunch money please put the money in an envelope or small bag with your child’s first and last name, teacher’s name and label it lunch money. This helps the office make sure that it gets to the correct account.
September is a busy and important month. It sets the tone for the school year. We will be busy learning routines and developing what a learning/thinking classroom looks and sounds like.
Things we will be studying in September include…
- Reading: building stamina (reading for longer periods of time), comprehension strategies (check for understanding and back up to reread if it doesn’t make sense), and word attack strategies (what to do when you come to a word you don’t know). We will also review letter sounds and last year’s sight words (often called refrigerator words).
- Writing: Small moments (writing about something that we have done in our lives). We will also focus on using letter/sound knowledge to write words we don’t know how to spell (best guess spelling – write down what you hear).
- Math: Our first unit in math establishes daily math routines, counting and comparing numbers, locating numbers on a number line, counting on and back from a given number, exploring number patterns, organizing and representing data using charts and tables.
- Social Studies: Communities/Neighborhoods is our first unit of study. We will learn what working together, making friends, neighborhoods, our school and family communities.
Thank you to everyone for sending in your supply fees and headphones. As a friendly reminder, please send in $40.00 student fees if you haven’t done so already.
